One of the most beautiful things about Yin Yoga is how little you need to begin. No fancy kit. No expensive equipment. Just you, a quiet space, and the willingness to pause.
But that said, props can make a huge difference when it comes to comfort and support — especially if you're holding poses for a few minutes at a time. So, let’s break it down.
Yoga Mat
A non-slip surface helps you feel grounded. But if you're just starting out, a towel or blanket on carpet works just fine.
Blocks (or Books)
These are great for supporting your knees, hands, or hips. No blocks? Use firm cushions, stacked books, or even sturdy food containers wrapped in a towel.
Bolster (or Pillows)
Bolsters are brilliant for heart openers and resting into poses. A firm bed pillow or a rolled-up blanket can do the job just as well.
Blanket
Useful for cushioning knees, sitting bones, or covering yourself in savasana. If you're practicing in the evening, a cosy layer helps you stay relaxed.
Strap (or Dressing Gown Belt / Scarf)
Great for connecting with your feet in seated stretches or helping the shoulders soften. Anything long and soft will work!
Props aren't there to make things harder or more "serious" — they’re there to support you. To help your body fully release into the shapes. To soften effort. To let gravity do the work.
In Yin, we’re not chasing a stretch. We’re inviting the body to unwind — and props help that invitation to feel safe and sustainable.
Set your props up before you begin. That way, you can move between poses with ease, staying in that lovely, relaxed zone without faffing around.
Yin Yoga isn’t about pushing through. It’s about allowing. And props are part of that process. They give your body permission to soften, surrender, and settle.
So grab what you have, get comfy, and let’s begin.
